Single-Molecule Ingredients in Cosmetics - An Everlasting Hype?

Time and again, products appear on the cosmetic shelves that highlight a specific ingredient. Once one brand starts, others usually follow. Hyaluronic acid, for example, has been experiencing a resurgence for years. The hype eventually dies down, only for hyaluronic acid to suddenly reappear on almost every package.

But what is behind these trends?

Often, it is simply the adoption of a buzzword. In the age of the internet, these spread even more rapidly and become widely known. Many consumers do not know exactly what the ingredient can do or how it works. Others, however, analyze the INCI lists of products, and such ingredients are easy to identify. Very often, these are substances that occur naturally in the body, but their quantity decreases over time.

However, the use of such active ingredients also has its downsides. They are not always easy to formulate, stable, or safe. Retinol is a good example of this. Additionally, not all are of natural origin or compliant with natural cosmetics, which is increasingly desired by customers.

Plant-based ingredients, on the other hand, often have the same effect or contain a significant portion of the molecules mentioned above. The synergistic effect and often better bioavailability should not be overlooked. However, these products are not as easy to identify on INCI lists. Brands are therefore always looking for the individual substances to place them prominently on their packaging.

At Mibelle Biochemistry, we have many boosters of these endogenous substances: NovoRetin™ (Retinol), PhytoCellTec™ Exosomes (Exosome), RejuveNAD™ (NAD+) are good examples. With these active ingredients, we ensure at least the same effect as with topical application, often even beyond. At the same time, they are usually easier to formulate or have no side effects. In this way, the buzzword can be mentioned on the packaging and other customer needs can be met at the same time

In conclusion, the future of cosmetics lies in a balanced combination of proven single-molecule ingredients and innovative, plant-based alternatives to meet the increasing demands of consumers while ensuring safety and efficacy.
